Etymology

I’ve been thinking about the word “authentic” in relation to Christianity and Christians. It seems that many times we are not truly authentic – or else we wouldn’t be accused of being hypocritical as much as we are.

Anyway… I really like the etymology of the word.

It goes back to the Greek word authentes from autos “self” + hentes “doer, being” and has the meaning “original, genuine, principal”or “one acting on one’s own authority.”

My prayer is that we would be genuine Christians. I think that’s what the book of James means when it says we should be “doers” of the word…
