7 Layer Dip

I remember someone once telling me that they thought when God works in things that it is like a 7 Layer Dip.

The idea is that He is not just doing one simple thing, but that when he moves it is complex, layered and deep.

I think I agree… When we act there is usually one outcome. When God acts, it seems, there is a myriad of outcomes.

He is like a conductor who with one wave of a hand brings in an entire orchestra… many diverse instruments all working in harmony and all from one simple act of the conductor.

What do you think?

  1. I like dip, but I prefer the 4-layer variety!

I have also heard it described as looking through a weaving loom- on one side it’s a jumbled mess of string and on the other it’s a beautiful tapestry~

    Have a safe trip, brother.

  2. That’s what is so mysterious about God. Sometimes it is a 7 layer dip and sometimes there’s no dip at all.

Trying to appreciate the times when God works while not getting frustrated when there is silence on the other end of the line is a constant struggle and area of growth for me.

I’m learning to remember the 7 layer dip moments more by journaling so that I can stand strong in the times where it is a 1 layer dip or less.

  3. I agree completely! I don’t think God is ever just doing “one thing.” Except…well, I think that our actions also have a myriad of complex outcomes, and we’ll find that we weren’t just doing one thing either when we did whatever it was we did…The difference, of course, is that we’re not deliberate about it, whereas God is! I guess His layers become our layers too when we just do what He asks us to do, moment by moment. My grandmother led a little boy to Christ, and he grew up and founded a huge child evangelism ministry. Anyway, I love that God asks us to do little things, and then makes them huge, and we don’t have to make them huge ourselves…

I don’t usually post comments, but this was a great post! Deep thoughts, deep dip. :)

Kirk and I are praying for you guys. God speed your journey…and your luggage.
