Everything is Spiritual

Everything is Spiritual

This morning I had the opportunity to speak to a group of businessmen and businesswomen at a Central Oregon Christian Businessman’s breakfast.

I traced out the history of the sacred/secular divide in the Western Church and then discussed how the Reformers tried to unify the split and help people realize that everything is spiritual and anything can be done to the glory of God – no matter how simple or seemingly secular.

All of it was aimed at two points I wanted to make:

1. Pastors need to dream bigger dreams so that professionals don’t feel stifled by church.

2. The business class needs to not give up on church.

If the vision is compelling and the business class is engaged, I believe that the local church can do more than any of us imagine is possible.

  1. This extends to the arts, too. I’ve observed a great divide between ‘Christian film’ and ‘secular (i.e. Hollywood) film’, and it seems a not uncommon opinion in the church that Christian filmmakers belong in the former, not the latter sphere. It’s very frustrating, especially because ‘Christian film’ tends to not be very well-made, and therefore ends up just preaching to the choir instead of reaching the masses.
