Looks like I get to go to Ghana in October to visit some of the old slave forts used in the Atlantic Slave Trade. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time as part of learning more about slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) is home to several forts used by both the Portuguese, Dutch and British as part of what is known as the Middle Passage of the slave trade.
Here’s a fantastic book on the Atlantic Slave Trade: Saltwater Slavery by Stephanie Smallwood
I’ll be doing some personal study over there and my friends Jerod and Micah will be working on some video projects.
(Here’s a map of Ghana)
My husband and I go to Ghana every year. We have visited both Elmina and Cape Coast- a very sobering experience.
