As we continue the Give Thanks series at Antioch I recently spoke on Philippians 2 and the way of humility and humiliation in the Christian life. Often when we think of God’s will for our lives, we think it comes with glory, honor and pleasure. We think we’ll get what we want because God gives good gifts. Underneath those thoughts is another assumption: that God has an individual will for my life. The reality is that God has one will that’s big enough to fit all of us.
It’s not about our goals, our will or our individual wants. It’s about God’s will and where we fit into His plan.
This week Michael McBride, Lead Pastor of The Way Christian Center in Berkeley, CA, preached on Philippians 3 asking, “What must I die to in order to live for Christ?” As we die to ourselves we are able count it all joy when we face suffering–because we are able to share in the fellowship of Christ’s suffering and participate in the power of his resurrection.
