Thanksgiving and Pride

A strange day to do sermon prep, but I’ve been thinking and working a lot today on this Sunday’s message on Pride as part of the 7 Deadly Sins Series.

I don’t know if it’s because today is Thanksgiving or if its just an obvious connection, but I think one of the greatest ways to battle the problem of pride is to give thanks to God.

Pride is a problem of enlarging self and minimizing God. It is something that happens when we take too much ownership for the good we’re blessed with or the opportunities we have. When we don’t realize all we have was given and can be taken away we become self sufficient or self-righteous.

Pride begins with a small conception of God.

Below is my favorite sermon of the last several years that was part of the Big God Series. It speaks to the necessity of fear or respect of God in our understanding of the love of God.

Looking forward to Sunday and revisiting this distinction!

(Happy Thanksgiving!)
