A light to no one…

A light to no one

There’s a line I came across recently in a Robert Frost poem which reads, “He was a light to no one but himself.” The phrase is both robust and tragic.

I remember hearing a similar saying years ago. It is that many conversations and arguments, unfortunately, add more heat than light.

It’s sad. We should be able to add light to others. We should be able to enlighten them so that they see more and see better. Adding no light or simply heating things up so that everyone is steamed is a waste.

Thinking about these phrases makes me hunger for groups and communities that are mature enough to disagree well — committed enough to study well — bold enough to submit well — and passionate enough to live well.

I hope, especially as a Christian, that I am never “A light to no one…”
