Paradox: A Poem

paradox copy

Earlier this summer we finished up the Paradox series at Antioch. Throughout the series we had several church members creating paintings and poetry. I liked this particular poem from Marc Wagner, inspired by a time of sharing among our church community.

When you’re living in a paradox
And haven’t reached the end of your story yet,
That’s faith
When you’re living in the emptiness
Where even emotions have an echo
in so much space
Right there in the unknown
Right there in the fullness of not being home
Where the journey itself is a miracle
And every step, a furtive poem
That’s faith,
That’s faith.
When you take the best of what God gives you
And give it all away
When you remember the blessings,
like manna that never stayed
When you accept this cup, when you stay up
And never cease to pray
That’s faith my friend
The faith you taught me then
faith weened,
of things seen
Stretched long and tight in between,
The beginning
and the relentlessly receding,
thousand-mile end.
