Praise Her at the Gates

Maybe this is controversial, but we need to make sure we’re talking sense and using biblical logic when we talk about women.

Here is the message, “Praise Her at the Gates,” from Antioch’s Proverbs Sermon Series. The title is taken from the last chapter of Proverbs and the exhortation to praise noble women at the gates of the city and in the public square.

May we all be found praising women at the gates!

Bonhoeffer, David and Goliath, and the Sistine Chapel

This quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer on Easter in his Letters and Papers from Prison is what made me think of my Easter Sermon for this year.

“What do Dietrich Bonhoeffer, David and Goliath, and the Sistine Chapel have in common?”

(Next week, “What do C.S. Lewis, the Grand Canyon, and Mary Magdelene have in common?”

Richard Leo Twiss

Last week saw the passing of a good friend who had an infectious spirit, commanding presence and prophetic voice.

Richard’s talk last summer at Antioch was one that needed to be, and still needs to be heard.

I, and many others, will miss him greatly.

A Biography of Mars Hill

Here is the video from this past Sunday’s message.

The goal was to do a brief biopic of Mars Hill – where Paul preached his famous sermon to the Athenian leaders – and develop a contrast between a Jerusalem vs. Athens context of ministry.

Other than the fact I was exhausted and Tamara said it showed, I hope you like it!

Creating Christmas

Here’s the sermon from Antioch this past Sunday.

The goal was to keep it short and meaningful, but I still had enough time to explore a theme I’ve been thinking a lot about – creating, innovation and the power of words.

Take a look if you have a few minutes before the holidays are all the way over!

Wisdom and Relationships

So this sermon took a different twist.

I set out to speak about relational principles (which began to feel like I would be reminding people of what they learned in 2nd grade).  Instead, the thrust of this became about the wisdom (or the joy!) of handling relationships and the rest of life the way we know we ought to.

“The prospect of the righteous is joy.” Proverbs 10:28

Our greatest life is found in living our life surrendered and obedient.

In relationships and in everything else, wisdom and righteousness are the path to life.

Jeremy Courtney and The Preemptive Love Coalition

Check out the interview below with my friend, Jeremy Courtney, founder and executive director of the Preemptive Love Coalition.

Preemptive Love exists to bring heart surgeries to Iraqi children in need.

It is one of the most fascinating stories and approaches to business, justice and missional love I have come across.

Thanks to Jeremy for hitching a ride out to Central Oregon to be with the folks at Antioch.

Faith and Apologetics

One of the blessings at Antioch over the last six years has been Rick Gerhardt.

Rick joined on as our first Elder at Antioch before our public launch in 2006 and has been a rock of wisdom, knowledge and faith both for Antioch and as a professor at Kilns College.

Rick is a first rate scholar with advanced degrees in Raptor Biology and Christian Apologetics.  He is thoughtful, articulate and incredibly well written.

It’s always a treat when he is able to share with the Antioch congregation to think deeper and to trust God more.

Here is his most recent message of a week ago titled: Faith and Apologetics.

A Theology of Hope

This past Sunday, my good friend Don Jacobson gave the message at Antioch Church.

Don has been brewing on this message for years and the talk he gave was the fruit of all his wrestling.

For anyone who has struggled with pain, suffering, questioning the goodness of God or grabbing hold of a future hope, this message is specifically for you.

Economic Justice

Here are two of my favorite people – Keith Wright, International President of Food for the Hungry, and Nathan George, Founder of Trade As One.

I just spent the better part of today in conversation with these guys about dozens of different domestic and global issues and can’t think of two finer folks to watch in a message together.

Enjoy!
